An introduction to Color Theory for painters using the systems developed by influential painter, theorist, and educator Henry Munsell. As a studio class, sessions will help artists of all levels better understand the physical properties of paint, mixing complex colors, and the illusionistic properties of color. Students will develop a keen eye for the inherent properties of color with the intent to replicate. Suitable for all levels.

Abstract Art - History & Process

Hans Hoffman once stated, “What goes on in abstract art is the proclaiming of aesthetic principles…It is in our own time that we have become aware of pure aesthetic considerations.” Discuss different types of abstract painting, processes, and intentions as a foundation from which paintings will be created. Focus on line, shape, form, and color, and begin to see beyond the visual world and abstract from nature. Work with non-traditional materials to discover the inherent aesthetic principles of a medium. Suitable for all levels.

Color & Abstraction
Penland School of Crafts
This process-centered workshop will develop abstract imagery using drawing, painting, low-tech printmaking and collage. With an emphasis on color we will look to the visual world for moments of departure where one can explore color as both form and content. The physical, psychological and cultural aspects of color will provide a theoretical foundation for the role of color in an abstract composition. Emphasis on process and experimentation will be supported by demonstrations, one-on-one and group discussions, and presentations on historic and contemporary references.
